I was recently thinking about all of the things that I need to get accomplished, and how overwhelmed I felt. Then I thought about how our emergent bilingual students must feel and how they must feel like this all the time.
When someone is talking to me, I want to be engaged and listen to what they are saying. But think about what would have happened if we all had to take notes. How much would have been missed? A little here, and a little there, right? But nonetheless, a little. Well, what if you are not familiar with English and you are trying to listen and not miss anything, and then on top of that, trying to write in this foreign language so you can take notes to remember what you never really understood to begin with?
PHEW! Makes me just tired thinking about it all, and tired remembering how I felt at the age of 21 in Argentina trying to do the same thing in a 100% Spanish, content objective based class. One thing that would have helped me thought, would have been being provided a copy of the notes before the class. This way I could preview, and review as the class learned. Though many kids don’t rush home to read notes, at least they would have be able to have a set guide in front of them as they were only have to listen to you in class, and write only a few notes, instead of everything.
Just something to consider!
